Tips for Nail Care

BEHIND-THE-SCENES with Steven Tran, Owner of Nail Tech

Greeting customers as they enter Nail Tech while busy with his own clientele is ever-present store owner Steven Tran. It is a point of pride for him that, regardless of whether it is a manicure, pedicure, waxing service and/or massage, each customer at the Howell Plaza Shopping Center salon “feel comfortable and welcomed.”

Steven, who came to United States from Vietnam as a teenager in 1987, was introduced to the nail business by his wife, Joanne. When the couple met in Boston, she was already running her own salon. Once married, they made their way to New Jersey to purchase the existing nail business at Howell – that was 18 years ago.

“When you’re in this kind of business, you have to be able to do everything,” Steven explains. With a staff of seven and licensed by the State of New Jersey, he is often seen instructing each to ensure the best service. Keeping the salon tools and equipment exceptionally clean and using professional sterilizing units to eliminate bacteria are a necessary priority for his long-time customers and new walk-in clients.

The arduous process of “drying” and the inevitable nail polish smudges are now a thing of the past. Steven wholehearted recommends the gel process. “Once the gel manicure or pedicure is done, you really are finished to get up and go. And, it lasts 2-3 weeks without chipping.”

In addition to mani-pedis, the salon offers waxing services – and they’re not just for women. “It’s not uncommon for men to stop in for back-waxing, even during wintertime.”

Tips from Nail Tech Salon Owner Steven Tran

  • Sanitize, Sanitize, Sanitize!
  • Bringing your own tools doesn’t = safety. Professional salons sanitize and disinfect their tools with hospital-grade solutions and techniques.

  • Relax and Enjoy
  • Unshaven legs? Super cracked heels? A pedicure from 2010? Nail technicians have seen it all…no need to be self-conscious.

  • Skip the Pre-Pedicure Shave
  • Even though nail salons like Nail Tech rinse and disinfect their tubs after every client, if you have a superficial nick and cut, your skin may be more susceptible to infection. So, skip shaving your legs right before your pedicure.

  • Shhhhhhh
  • Quiet your phone so you and others can simply chill uninterruptedly during your salon experience.

  • The Tipping Golden Rule
  • If you are always wondering if you’ve over- or under-tipped, 20% is right on the money. If you are especially pleased, definitely tip extra.
